Why Are Natural Cosmetics Better? Discover the Magic of Indonesia’s Herbal Ingredients!

Beauty is often a primary concern for many people, especially women. It’s not just about appearance but also about maintaining healthy skin. In recent years, more and more people have turned to natural cosmetic products. This is not just a passing trend but a major shift in how we perceive skincare. From skincare to makeup, herbal-based cosmetics are becoming increasingly popular. But what exactly makes natural ingredients so appealing?

Indonesia: A Country Rich in Natural Resources

Did you know that Indonesia is home to over 30,000 identified species of plants, animals, and microbes? Out of that number, around 950 species have been proven to have potential use as medicinal or health food ingredients. This makes Indonesia incredibly special in terms of natural resources. Imagine the vast wealth of nature that can serve as a significant resource for the natural cosmetics industry.

Natural Cosmetics: Safer Option

Natural cosmetics are believed to cause fewer side effects compared to chemical-based products. A survey was conducted among cosmetic users to assess the causes of skin-related side effects. The results showed that 94% of respondents believe chemical-based cosmetics are more likely to cause side effects, while only 6% expressed the same concern about natural cosmetics

    (Chen Q., 2009)

In the past, cosmetics often contained synthetic or chemical ingredients that could cause irritation or even long-term skin damage. However, today, many people are becoming aware of the risks associated with these chemicals and are switching to products that are more environmentally friendly and safer for their skin. Natural ingredients, such as plant extracts, not only provide gentle care for the skin but are also safer to use due to minimal side effects.

Centella asiatica: A Natural Secret for Skincare

One of the most well-known herbal ingredients in the cosmetic world is Centella asiatica, commonly referred to as “pegagan” in Indonesia. This plant has long been used in traditional medicine and is now increasingly recognized worldwide for its skin benefits. Rich in bioactive compounds such as asiaticoside, madecassoside, and asiatic acid, Centella asiatica has become a key ingredient due to its ability to stimulate collagen production, accelerate wound healing, and improve skin hydration

           (Z. Su et al., 2025)

In cosmetic applications, Centella asiatica extract offers a wide range of benefits, including anti-aging and whitening, wound healing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, acne treatment, and relief of atopic dermatitis. Unlike chemical active ingredients, Centella asiatica is highly suitable for sensitive skin, particularly in reducing symptoms such as redness. As demonstrated in this study, facial creams formulated with natural actives proved to be effective both in the short and long term for soothing sensitive skin. The investigated product improved facial redness, balanced skin hydration and sebum levels, and provided significant calming effects.

Why Should We Switch to Natural-Based Cosmetics?

Besides being safer for the skin, natural cosmetics are also more environmentally friendly. Products made from natural ingredients tend to be produced using more sustainable processes that do not harm ecosystems and minimize the use of harmful chemicals. Herbal-based cosmetics are often packaged in eco-friendly materials, making them even more attractive to consumers who care about environmental sustainability. Additionally, natural cosmetics are often more effective in providing long-term benefits. Herbal ingredients naturally nourish the skin, repair damage, and combat signs of aging.

Educating Consumers and the Industry

However, to maximize the potential of these natural ingredients, it is essential to increase awareness and knowledge among both consumers and cosmetic producers. As consumers, we need to understand how to choose the right cosmetic products, recognize safe and effective natural ingredients, and avoid harmful chemical substances.

The cosmetic industry should also be encouraged to innovate by utilizing local herbal ingredients that offer significant benefits. With more research and development, natural-based cosmetics can become a more sustainable and safe beauty solution for everyone.

Beauty That Comes from Nature

Indonesia has an extraordinary abundance of natural resources that can be harnessed to produce cosmetic products that are not only effective but also safe and environmentally friendly. Switching to natural-based cosmetics is not just a smart choice for skin health but also a significant step in preserving environmental sustainability.

As the trend of natural beauty continues to grow, it is time for us to be more selective in choosing skincare products. Herbal-based cosmetics not only enhance outer beauty but also nurture the skin from within. Start making the switch to natural-based cosmetic products and experience the benefits!
